Now rotate the whole cube and bring the unsolved layer to the top. This is just for the sake of checking only.
The top layer is solved in two stages like in first layer.
- form the cross with the edge pieces.
- insert the four top layer corner pieces.
The formed cross after finishing these steps will look like the picture given below.

Forming the cross is done in two steps. Firstly we should bring all the edge pieces to their correct locations. Then in the second step we will orient them correctly.
There could be four scenarios you can find in the top layer.
Pattern-1

All the four edge pieces are wrongly located (don't worry about the orientation now)
Pattern-2

Only 2 opposite edge pieces are located correctly. Red/yellow and pink/yellow
Pattern-3

Only 2 adjacent edge pieces are located correctly. Red /yellow and green /yellow.
Pattern-4

All the four edge pieces are correctly located. (don't worry about the orientation now)
Here in this example we are taking the second pettern for our explanation. Have a look at that picture once again.
Now simply rotate the top layer until you align at least one edge piece, with it’s corresponding center piece. In this instance Red /yellow piece
The next step is, we should change the wrongly placed Yellow / white and Yellow /green pieces to their correct locations without breaking already correctly located edges.

To do this rotate the whole cube up side down and hold it like in the picture given below. Now consider the white center as your front side. The correctly located red /yellow is your left hand side and correctly located pink /yellow is your right hand side. We changed the front perspective only to make you understand properly what we are doing. Keep in mind, we should always keep the correctly located edge on the left hand side.

Holding the Rubik cube like given in the picture and do MOVE-2
After applying “ MOVE-2” notice that one of the edge pieces which belong to the middle layer has come out of it’s correct location. But this time you know that we can put it back in place by applying either “ MOVE-1” or “MOVE-2” as normally we does to solve the middle layer.
